There are two main types of domain registration lookup. They are each used for two completely different purposes. The first type is used to search research and find available domain names. The second type of domain registration lookup is the kind when you want to find the owner of a domain name, or information about it. Depending on what your goal is of your domain search, depends on what types of sites you want to search.

If you are looking up a web domain to purchase and want to know the availability, you would do your domain registration lookup at a domain registrar or a web hosting company. If you read my other articles, you will learn that I highly recommend registering your domain name at your hosting company, instead of vice versa.

Some common registrars and hosts are: GoDaddy, Register, HostGator, etc., you can go to any and do searches for a domain name or keywords and they will tell you which domains and extensions are available, maybe the.com or.net versions are not available, but.org is, you never know until you do a lookup.

Also, some companies give you really good suggestions if your name is taken, as always, use different sites to get different ideas that they give you, but once you actually register it, do it at your hosting company for convenience of DNS and setup speed factors.

The other type of domain registration lookup, is when you are trying to find information about an already registered name. Some examples are: the owner information or other technical specifications like WHOIS information, registrar or hosting company, IP address, DNS settings, expiration date, etc.

To find this you use sites like DomainTools, Whois, etc. You can also find this information when you are searching for domains, if the domain is taken, usually in small text it says something like more information or whois data, and you can find this information while you are also using the other type of domain registration lookup type.

Well, those are the Two different types of domain name lookup methods,

a. One is for finding new unregistered names, and
b. The other is for finding currently registered name information.

I wish you much luck finding great names and also getting the info you need, when you need it.

A domain name is what you type when going to a web page (ie: google.com or yahoo.com or wikipedia.com). You have to register a domain name to use it for your website. Domain Name Registrars handle the registration of domain names. GoDaddy and Network Solutions are examples of registrars.

If you have a web page and you want to use, Such as www.businessname.com or www.productname.com you have to register the domain name with the registrar to be able to use it., but in reality a lot of the most popular domain names will have been taken already, hopefully not by your competitors!

Country-specific domain names will also normally get preferential search rankings from localized search engines such as Google UK.

Don't forget that as well as .com and .co.uk, there are other so called top level domain (TLD) extensions such as .net, .org, .info, .biz, etc so it might be worth considering one of those.

If you are unlucky and your perfect domain has already been taken and is not up for sale, you will have to find the next best domain. Fortunately many websites that sell domain names have a feature to help you choose variations of a name that aren't already registered.
